RABI Beneficiary case study

A positive approach to tackling adversity

Each year, RABI touches the lives of thousands of farming people. Recently, RABI supported 32-year-old, father of two, Scott Bailey, who was unable to continue working as a herdsman after losing his eyesight, as a result of a complication associated with diabetes. RABI’s grant enabled Scott to purchase a laptop with specialised software developed for people with impaired vision.

“I grew up on my family’s dairy farm in Cheshire and have always worked in the sector. When I lost my sight, it was a shock to be at home all the time, especially after the long hours spent on the farm.

“Once I was assigned a rehabilitation officer, she quickly got the ball rolling, making sure I had the right support to get on with life.

“In fact, the rehabilitation officer suggested contacting RABI. I was aware of the farming charity through seeing their stand at The Nantwich Show, but I hadn’t thought they’d be able to help someone in my situation.

“Once I emailed, RABI were very quick to respond, and the regional welfare officer really went above and beyond. Following an assessment process, RABI provided a grant for the laptop and some special, portable direct lighting.

“This has made a massive difference. It means I can continue studying at home and be more self-sufficient. This is especially true now that I have my guide dog, Milo.

“The equipment that RABI has funded has enabled me to look to the future and start building a new career as a counsellor to help others with diabetes.”

“My connection with the farming community remains strong and it’s reassuring to know that RABI is there for us. As farmers we can be quite self-reliant but it’s important to remember that asking for help can be an important step towards regaining your independence.”
