What are the symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms usually fall into one of two categories:

  • Inattentiveness
  • Hyperactivity and impulsiveness

Inattentiveness

The main signs are:

  • Having a short attention span and being easily distracted
  • Making careless mistakes – for example, in school or college work
  • Appearing forgetful or losing things
  • Being unable to stick to tasks that are boring or time-consuming
  • Appearing to be unable to listen to or carry out instructions
  • Constantly changing activity or task
  • Having difficulty organising tasks

Hyperactivity & impulsiveness

The main signs are:

  • Being unable to sit still, especially in calm or quiet places
  • Constantly fidgeting
  • Being unable to concentrate on tasks
  • Moving a lot
  • Talking a lot
  • Being unable to wait their turn
  • Acting without thinking
  • Interrupting conversations
  • Having little or no sense of danger

Note: most people with ADHD experience symptoms that are listed in both columns, not just one.

Helping you to understand your ADHD and find ways to cope

If you have a diagnosis of ADHD, or are waiting for an assessment, you may be worried or need some help understanding your feelings about it. Perhaps you have concerns about how ADHD might affect your life and what you want to do in the future.

The good news is that you can learn to manage ADHD, and find that it even gives you certain benefits.

There are lots of ways that Kooth can help with the challenges of having ADHD, for example:

Messaging

Our message support may benefit those who feel uncomfortable with live, back-and-forth conversations. Instead, you can express yourself in your own time, without distraction, or time-pressure. A qualified professional will then reply to your message. When you’re ready to reply, you can do so on your own terms

Live chat

Kooth’s live text-chat is a good option for those who feel comfortable with in-the-moment support. You can drop-in whenever you like, too, which is especially helpful for neurodivergent people who struggle with scheduling and timing. You can chat whenever you  need to, for just a single session or more regularly.

Understanding

In chat sessions, practitioners can also help you understand what you need and how to advocate for yourself.

Journaling

Kooth’s journal feature can help you express how you feel in different ways. Write down your feelings and reflect later.

Routine-based support

If you like routine and precise timing, you can talk to a regular practitioner at an arranged time that suits you.

Goal-setting

Our goal setting feature might support you if you have like breaking up tasks into bitesize pieces.

Need to talk to someone about ADHD? Chat with our friendly team

You can text-chat with our friendly team of professionals about whatever you’re feeling.

They will listen to you without judgement and offer advice that can really help.

We know many young people can’t log on during school hours, so text chat is available in the evenings and on weekends until 10pm.

Write it down, let it out

Our journals can help you safely express your feelings. You can use them to track your progress over time.

Writing your feelings down can help you see things in a new light. Seeing how your feelings evolve can help you develop habits that create positive habits for those living with ADHD. There’s no pressure to ‘achieve’ anything, just nurturing support and tools that can really help.
