If you’re experiencing grief or loss, it’s important to remember that the right support can really help.
The Kooth Grief Collection explores practical ways we can manage feelings of grief or loss.
Remembering those who have died can feel really important. In this article, we explore how creating a memory box can be a useful way to keep those memories in one place. It can help you grieve, remember them, and give you a space to think about them when you need one.
Activities like this can help you find a positive way forward. There are many more ways we can support you inside Kooth. It’s completely free to use and you’ll find a welcoming, supportive community, tons of self-help tools and caring practitioners who will listen to whatever is on your mind.
Here’s how you can make your own memory box
The Memory Box
Equipment needed for this:
- Coloured pens
- Shoe box
- Stickers
- Photo
- Shells
- Post-its
- Essential oil/perfume
Step 1: Pick a container
This can be anything from a shoe box, a tin that has sentimental value, or something entirely different. I’ve chosen a shoe box.
Step 2: Decorate your container
You don’t have to decorate your container, but you certainly can if it feels right to you. I’m going to decorate this one with some stickers I like.
Step 3: Next, you need to think about what you want to put in your memory box. Here’s a few ideas:
- Photos that hold a special memory
- Small objects like pieces of jewellery you’ve been given, small gifts, or keepsakes from a day out like this little shell from a day at the beach
- Letters or even memories you’ve written down on post it notes or bits of paper
- Drawings
- Playlists or even just the names of songs that feel important to you
- A perfume or scent that helps you remember
Your memory box can contain anything you like. And you can use it however you want to. You might look at your memory box every week, every month, or just on special occasions. It’s totally up to you. How you use it and what’s in it might change over time, and that’s okay too.
